Anonymous sent: hi! Do you have some non-taobao stores to recommend, for us chinese people outside of china? 😂

ziseviolet:

Hi, thanks for the question!

Yes, there are quite a few non-Taobao hanfu stores that are more easily accessible for those outside of China! If any followers have experience with these stores, please share!:

1. Nüwa Hanfu - a hanfu shop based in Ohio, newly founded by @mochihanfu! All items are carefully curated for quality, and Mochi is very communicative and transparent on sourcing & logistics. Lovely selection of hanfu & accessories, including original designs.

2. Hanfu Story - a Singapore-based hanfu shop with a large selection of hanfu & accessories. There’s an interview with the founder here.

3. New Hanfu - mentioned in my post here. I’ve personally never shopped there, but I did get a message giving it a good review, so I think it’s worth a look! ^^

4. NewMoonDance - has an appealing selection of hanfu & qipao. They also provide a daigou/代购 (surrogate shopping) service, through which they can ship hanfu from Taobao to international customers for a fee.

5. Fashion Hanfu - has a large collection of hanfu, also sells wedding qungua and Chinese-style pet clothes.

6. Hanfu Modern - hanfu (including dance hanfu) & qipao with a casual, contemporary vibe.

7. Yesstyle - recommended by a follower. According to them, “You can also buy hanfu off Yesstyle since it’s just a Taobao reseller if you want an English website. The prices aren’t bad and you can order parts of an ensemble in different sizes if you need to. I recently bought a ruqun from them and it was really nice!”

Generally speaking, non-Taobao English websites that sell hanfu are going to be Taobao resellers, because Taobao is where most hanfu brands sell their clothes. If you can understand Chinese, you can buy directly from Taobao stores that ship internationally. I have a list of recommendations for Taobao hanfu stores here & hanyuansu stores here.

If any followers have more recs for non-Taobao hanfu stores, please share! ^^

Hope this helps!

Hi! I was wondering if you knew any stores which sell hanfu in natural fabrics, as well as support independent businesses? I’d like to buy a set and some accessories but the places that I have found are mostly on wish and amazon and I’d rather not buy from unethical business.

Hi! Thanks for asking.

There are a lots on Taobao, where most hanfu shops are - I am not sure what is your budget, what style you are looking for, or how long you are willing to wait for the production. Do you do silk? Or cotton only?

@ziseviolet has a masterlist on buying hanfu, but that list of brand is definitely not conclusive. We both tagged our shops in our post or at least leave the name of the shop in the description. If you see something you like you could check out the store (although most of the time that particular sets would be sold out).

Here are a few independent shops I have saved that often make and sell pieces made from natural fibers or blends of natural fibers. Hanfu shops tend to use linen (麻 or 亚麻), ramie (苎麻), cotton-linen (棉麻) and 天丝麻 (Tencel-linen) blends more than pure cotton, so searching for those key words on Taobao can help. Other useful keywords are 真丝 (real silk), 蚕丝 (silkworm silk), 香云纱 (”fragrant cloud gauze”, gambiered Guangdong silk), 羊毛 (wool).

春下 - simple and unfussy daywear, some menswear

襦一坊 - luxe silk goodness (especially gambiered Guangdong silk), rich earthy colors

君陈 - voluminous menswear with interesting textiles

问山居 - simple daywear in subdued colors

山涧 - silk silk and more silk, vibrant colors

桑纈 - also silk silk and more silk, understated elegance, gorgeous color and pattern combinations

簪花阁 - very soft and feminine, silk basics

You know, even if you check the Ukrainian news regularly, you still don’t see every awful thing that happens here.

Even I, as a Ukrainian, don’t see all of it. Every day I wake up and read the news. There are always some very big and awful new stories (like yesterday’s strike on Kramatorsk) that everyone will talk about right until the russians do another big and awful thing.

And then there are these smaller stories that people (including myself) often don’t notice. They always go “Today russians shelled *any village, city or town near the frontline or the border*. X wounded, Y killed” . And everyone is used to see this particular village, city or town in such news. Everyone just scrolls past it. And these stories almost never make it to the big foreign media, so most of the world never hears about it.

But these news are not just numbers and statistics. It’s real people, who died, or lost limbs, or their loved ones, or their homes.

Literally at every moment, russians are bombing some places, killing or torturing some people, or doing some other unimaginable horrible thing.

Obviously, if we start to think about every single person who was hurt and every single building that was damaged, we’d all go crazy. So I’m not asking anyone to do this.

I’m asking you to remember about Ukraine, at least sometimes. If you see a post (on tumblr or somewhere else), made by someone you trust, about one of the russian war crimes, please reblog it. Don’t just like it, reblog it. Yes, even if your blog is about cake recipes. Even if you only have 5 followers. This is very important.

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter ban Ukrainians all the time and take down our posts as sensitive content. Meanwhile Tumblr doesn’t do this but still, most users aren’t interested in our suffering so most posts about Ukraine get maximum 300 notes. Sometimes 500 if you’re very lucky. And it kinda feels like it’s always the same people who reblog it.

So, if you care about Ukrainians, please help us be heard. And thanks a lot to everyone who already supports us - we see you and we love you💙💛

List of russian lies in the UN or during diplomatic speeches:

1. In January-February of 2022 russia claimed in the UN that they will not invade Ukraine, that they have no plans to invade Ukraine, and evidence of upcoming invasion are lies made by the US or others.

End of the same month russia launched a full-scale invasion.

2. Russia claimed in the UN that the reason they attacked Ukraine was to fight some “local nazis” and that they are indeed good guys fighting Ukrainian hatred. That, however, does not explain why: a) russia opposed the grain deal until Turkey threatened to make it work one way or the other, showing their intention to starve hundreds of millions of people in neutral countries for no reason whatsoever, b) russia refused to allow UN or Red Cross etc to observe the conditions of POWs or to open humanitarian corridors for people to escape from Mariupol or other conflict zones, with thousands of witnesses reporting abductions, filtration camps, and shelling of retreating civilians, c) russia claimed to only want to protect local russian population, yet completely destroyed whole cities in majorly-russian-speaking Eastern Ukraine, like Mariupol (satellites showing mass graves), and bombing mainly civilian targets - schools, hospitals, theatres, a shopping mall during peak hours, a train station where people waited for evacuation, apartment buildings, etc. Currently we can see that there is no effort on the russian-controlled side of Dnipro river to help people in flooded areas, with videos and citizen testimonies reporting shelling of all disaster aid attempts, d) russia claimed that they only hate the “nazi” Ukrainian government, yet they openly shelled Ukrainian power grids during winter, for no other reason than to leave innocent civilians with no gas or electricity.

3. Russian state TV, public figures like Solovyov, former President and Prime Minister as well as head of security council of russia Medvedev openly stated either on national TV or in their social media pages that they want to “exterminate” Ukrainians. That the whole country should not exist, that Ukrainian language is fake, etc etc. This is genocidal speech and it is not limited to Ukraine either. The Baltic States, Poland, etc also received such claims - that they “do not exist” that they “belong to russia” or that they “should be invaded”. Makes it very obvious who the imperialistic, colonist aggressor actually is. Medvedev also repeatedly threatened Western European countries with missile or even nuclear attack, yet they claim to only be “defending themselves”.

4. Lavrov got laughed at during a summit in India for claiming that “russia was invaded by Ukraine”. Do I even need to explain why this is a lie? If I do, check 1st point again. Or just turn on your brain.

5. Then there’s more sci-fi nutjobby official russian claims (or lies) about - bioweapons in Ukraine, pidgeons carrying disease or weapons to russia, Ukraine having some super-soldiers, or even dark magic, as indicated by russian Ministry of Defense changing the goal of their “special military operation” from “denazification” to “desatanization”.

And that’s just a few of the main ones. More is discussed in the latest UN meeting, you can watch the video on their official website.

So, knowing all of this, why the fuck would you believe ANYTHING they say? Especially about the destruction of dam?

Russia has repeatedly shown aggressive attitude towards neighbouring countries, claimed their wish to occupy them, russian officials called for extermination of whole nationalities, and both President putin and Belova have enough evidence against them for ICC to issue a warrant for them for GENOCIDE AND WAR CRIMES.

If you still believe in russia, despite anything they themselves say, you’re either a genocide-supporter or unbelievably stupid.

I love how even I, a Canadian, found out just how bad the wildfires have gotten because all of the coverage about New York.

Not to say New Yorkers aren’t suffering and we shouldn’t talk about it at all. But like…I feel I’m seeing barely any coverage from the Canadian perspective. How our towns are also covered in thick haze, some almost as bad as New York if not just as bad (i know one day NY had the worse air quality in the world, I’m talking about over the whole course of this issue). Maybe it’s because I’m near the American border? I don’t know.

Just please guys, don’t forget those who are dealing with the flames, losing their homes, even family and friends, and overall, all they knew. Not to mention the indigenous sacred land has probably been lost. I’m lucky to be in a relatively safe area. But I can still see the haze. We could even smell the smoke on the air at one point today.

mariacallous:

The invasion and attack on Ukraine since February of last year is one of the clearest examples of right and wrong, with Russia being increasingly and almost cartoonishly vile and doubling-down, and there’s still people who act like it’s this murky unclear equally bad situation.

I’m usually the “things are complicated and nuanced! let’s keep and get some perspective!” bitch but this is absolutely not one of those times where there’s a whole lot of nuance or uncertainty.

(It’s also one of the clearest imperialist v anti-imperialist conflicts in recent history and yet people act like it’s not or that the situation is flipped).

Слава Україні

rootless-cosmopolitan:

In free Kherson, people are desperately going into toxic floodwaters amidst Russian shelling trying to save people and animals before they drown. In Russian-occupied Kherson, Russians are doing nothing to save civilians who are stuck on their roofs, screaming for help, and are shooting at those who do try to help. Witnesses have already seen elderly people who could not climb onto their roofs floating dead in the water.

Any “anti-war” leftist who still thinks that this war is just about meaningless borders, that there is “no war except class war,” that Ukrainians THEMSELVES don’t care whether they live under Russian or Ukrainian control - I have no choice but to think that you are a rancid ratfucker and wish you every bit of the “peace” you so desire for others.

garland-on-thy-brow:

I will continue to write and reblog about the catastrophe and ecocide caused by russians destroying Nova Kakhovka dam. The catastrophe of this scale has both immediate and longterm consequences, and both are horrible. It will be getting worse. If not for the heroism of all the people involved in the rescue, it would be a lot worse still.

I know it is tempting to ignore the horror happening far away. This is exactly what many people from other countries do right now. So I ask you not to. Both online and offline, please continue sharing the information about the catastrophe, as well as the ways to help [1] [2], with everyone you can reach. Yes, it is necessary.

It is great if you can donate, quite literally each 1 dollar means fuel for boats to rescue people, means clean water and life-saving medicine for someone.

But information is important too. Especially when news coverage is insufficient, when social networks shadowban posts about Nova Kakhovka dam, when many people are happy to believe lies and stay ignorant if this means they do not have to do anything while still perceiving themselves as good.

Oppose this.

Oppose silence, indifference, ignorance, and misinformation. Stay informed and talk to people.

myrddin-wylt:

I’m very tired. you probably heard that Russia destroyed the Kakhovka Dam to slow Ukraine’s counter offensive. here’s something I didn’t quite realize: since this February, the Russians operated the dam in juuuuust the right way so that as much water would build up as possible when the snow melted and spring showers started. and then they blew the whole thing up.

40,000 people may need to be evacuated. I don’t really have the energy to say anything else right now.

Hospitallers Medical Battalion: actual angels can confirm. they’re combat-zone medical services - you know how humanitarian groups like MFS and Red Cross have to pause operations due to the Russians fucking shooting at humanitarian zones? yeah, these guys don’t pause for bullets, they fucking walk into them and they bring out anyone they can.

Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation: you can choose from a number of various fundraiser projects here, if you’re feeling particularly picky. for those of you who balk at the idea of supporting anything military just please remember that things like vehicles and drones aren’t just for military use, they’re also for evacuation and finding the wounded and they’re fucking vital.

KSE Foundation: similar to the above, KSE has multiple projects you can choose from to donate to. looking at it right now, one of the projects with the lowest amounts of money raised thus far - despite being started in April - is Seeds for Ukraine, which will help Ukraine recover from the ecological devastation Russia has been wreaking (and with Ukraine, the countries that rely on Ukraine’s grain exports that Russia keeps trying to steal).

Come Back Alive: do these guys even need the introduction? they’re Come Back Alive. I’m kissing all of them.

United24: Zelenskyy’s brain child, and the official fundraising platform of Ukraine. Mark Hamill recommends the fundraisers for drones in particular.

UAnimals: Nova Kakhovka’s zoo got… pretty much completely swept away. all zoo residents except the birds have drowned. UAnimals has tried throughout the occupation to keep the animals safe, and they’ve been reporting on the status of the zoo. I don’t really know what to say except that I hope they’re able to save the pets and strays in the towns along the river.

You can find NGOs specific to evacuation efforts in this post; please signal boost it as well. I’ve listed them but am leaving the links for the op post.

  1. Ukrainian FireFighters Foundation
  2. Helping To Leave
  3. VOSTOK SOS
